April is National Poetry Month!
The
National Celebration of American Poets and world poetry was created by
the American Society of Poets in 1996 and given their “National”
designation by President Bill Clinton. In 1999, The League of Canadian
Poets also established National Poetry Month created to expand and
educate the world of poetry, particularly with younger audiences. Both
groups in the U.S. and Canada fill the month with lots of activities.
Canada celebrates Young Poets Week in the second week of April. On April 18th,
America celebrates Poem in Your Pocket Day, a day to carry your
favorite poem in your pocket to share with those closest to you. The
American Society of Poets also hosts a star-studded gala in honor of
American poetry every day during this month. Between these two groups
there is plenty to do this month!
So celebrate National Poetry Month! Read, write and rediscover the world of poetry this month.
