The space to take everything you need, the wisdom to leave the baggage behind....

After being trapped in a mine 69 days I was pleased to hear what the second evacuated miner said in a news conference, "I buried 40 years of my life down there, and I'm going to live a lot longer to be a new person.”(CNN) Over and over again every time there is a baptism at my church I have heard my pastor say, “Bury with me in baptism, to rise again.” I haven’t always understood what that meant but the phrase the Chilean miner gave me some insight. In order to gain a new life, we must bury all those old things that have held us back, strongholds. Not everyone has the same strongholds, but we all have them at some point in our walk.

When I got baptized at 6 or 7 years old, I can’t remember the exact age, I do not believe that I truly understood the life commitment that I was making. I grew up in church all my life, and I knew exactly the right things to say when ask about why I was getting baptized. I can hear me saying the words as clear as day, “So that God can cleanse me of my sins. To make a commitment to Him cause he died for my sins…” Okay pause, that sure sounds good and I sounded confident didn’t I, but I am guessing that I probably did it because it was the right thing to do rather than what I needed to do.

The confession that I made outwardly was not internalized until years later, when I was able to truly understand what it is to be baptized. I was born into a sinful world as a sinner, but God can wash all that away. Now I know in Christian politics there is much debate on the subject of whether or not you need to be baptized and when I should be done, but I am not getting into that. I will say this though, Jesus was baptized by John the Baptist (Check out John 1) and if Jesus did it and we are suppose to strive to be like Christ, why wouldn’t I want to be like him.

Now I have gotten slightly off topic but all brings me back to one point. Bury that old stuff. I am reminded of the Mary J. Blige Chevy Commercial from 2008, “The space to take everything you need, the wisdom to leave the baggage behind…”

  1. I have thought to get baptized again for years becuase I was on 12 years old when I got baptized and did not fully understand the scope of my committment. I am thinking at this point most people know that I am a certified Christian. : )
